Above & Beyond with Lynn Nottage by Howard Schatz

After seeing the play Mlima’s Tale by Lynn Nottage, Howard had to include the playwright in his ongoing project, Above & Beyond.

Nottage is a professor of playwriting at Columbia University in New York City, a graduate of Brown University and the Yale School of Drama. She is the only woman to have won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama--twice; the first in 2009 for Ruined, and the second in 2017 for Sweat. She also won an Obie Award that same year. In 2007, she was awarded a MacArthur “Genius” grant.

Howard's approach when making portraits for this series of remarkable men and women is to preceded the camera work with an in-depth interview. Not only does this let him create a bond with his subjects but it also gives him a chance to decide what kind of portraits will best describe the person in front of the lens.
